While the Internet has certainly made it easier for job hunters to locate potential positions, the ability to take the world with you on your smart phone can increase your chances of being hired. As job listings are pushed to you via alert systems,
you may find you get a leg up on desired employment and move your resume to the top of any employer's list. If you're on the go, pounding the pavement to find work, make sure you have the following applications installed to guide you.
LinkedIn: Based on the popular business social network, this free application links to your present account and your connections. Use the app as you would when browsing their main site - check connections for job openings and post to your subscribed groups. Have updates pushed to your phone while you're out on a search, too.
CareerBuilder.com App: Built to function like the main site, this app allows you to search geographically for positions. Its location ability zeroes in on where you are and pulls up what is available easily, with detail descriptions and contact information.
Echofon (or a comparable Twitter app): If you're an avid smart phone user, chances are you are set up to tweet and be tweeted. Having access to Twitter can help your job, too, if you sign on to a service like Tweet My Jobs or a similar site to receive regular notifications in your field.
Mapquest (or a comparable GPS/mapping app): Once you get the interview set, it's important to get there on time. Have a reliable application for plotting your drive to the office.
While one is apt to find dozens of applicable phone programs to aid in job hunting, having access to some of the basic (and free) apps is a great step in the right direction. Keep these on your phone and consult them regularly as you look for work, and you may find the time it takes to get hired is short.
